Twin Flames and Soulmates are two types of people who, when they appear in your life, change you in some way shape, or form. Soul Mate is a term that is widely used--often in movies and TV--to describe the ultimate romantic partner. Twin Flame, however, is having its moment and is being used more frequently these days. While they are both similar in essence and extremely romanticized concepts, Twin Flames and Soul Mates are both different in their definition and in the experiences they provide.
Soul Mates The best example of how romanticized both terms are is comparing the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of soulmates to the Urban Dictionary definition. MW describes a Soul Mate as, “a person who is perfectly suited to another in temperament,” and Urban Dictionary says, “No one can predict when soul mates will meet. You will meet your soul mate when the souls are ready to meet. Fate and destiny contribute to the romantic bliss and happiness where both partners are so immersed in the strong karmic connection. The relationship between soul mates has a certain magical, mystical feel to it.The love is so strong the chemistry is unexplainable and sex is mind blowing. Destiny makes sure these people find each other and gives two people the opportunity to have a fabulous relationship, grow as people and learn valuable lessons. A soul mate relationship is a concert being conducted by the universe. With your soul mate before you, you shed the fears and masks that deny you real love. You both work together in balance and always striving for equality and respecting each others contributions. Love is the center of everything you do, the synergy will be magnified with the power you need to manifest your dreams together. Soul mates feel that their souls are connected no matter the distance. Everything blends together harmoniously, conversations flow seamlessly, you feel their touch when apart and their voice echoes in your mind peacefully. A soul mate is your twin, a reflection of yourself, someone that will hold your hand and walk with you in darkness. Your soul mate makes you proud and everything he/she does or says you find enlightening. A soul mate completes you.”
Do you see what I mean when I say it is a wildly romanticized term?
The way I would describe a soul mate is somewhere in the middle of these two definitions. The biggest misconception about a soul mate is that we all just have one. In fact, we all have many soul mates that represent different kinds of love in our lives. A pet can be a soul mate, a best friend can be a soul mate, and of course, a husband, best friend, and life partner can be the ultimate soul mate. Soul mates are two souls that belong together, a perfect pair, guided together by god and the universe.
Twin Flames This is a term that I hear being used more and more these days, in the context of those describing their ultimate love, their “one and only.” While it’s true--we only have one twin flame--it’s not supposed to be the most positive experience when they show up in our lives. Twin Flames are the other half of our same soul. Think of a twin flame as ourselves in another body. They show up to teach us valuable lessons about ourselves and give us a true and honest reflection of who we are. They typically reflect all that is bad or weak about ourselves. What feels so magical about the twin flame connection at first is that there is an instant recognition. You can’t put a finger on it, but you know you had to have known this person before--but you won’t figure out how. Twin flame connections are magnetic, it’s an attraction and familiarity that feels like coming home. But make no mistake--this connection is meant to serve a valuable purpose, therefore, it is not everlasting. A twin flame serves his purpose by teaching you the lessons that you need to learn as they prepare you to receive your soul mate.
Twin flame relationships are tumultuous, intense, and dramatic. Twin flames are passionate and have high highs and low lows. For this reason, they are not sustainable. They can be very draining and painful because they are there to teach you something and grow your soul so that you are able to love even more deeply when your soul mate shows up. They are not your forever person. Whether you’ve encountered a soul mate or your twin flame, both types of experiences are blessings. When someone comes into your life that fits either description, take a moment to express gratitude and thank god and the universe for this person and the contributions they make to your soul’s journey.
